Gustave Courbet: "The Wounded Man"

John Ward: Come, sable night (6:07)
Ward explores the depth of human emotions in this plaintive masteripiece.

John Wilbye: Draw on, sweet night (4:45)
A deceptively smooth masterpiece that probably merits a Jungian depth psychology analysis.

John Dowland: Come, heavy sleep (1:37, baritone and guitar)
From "The First Booke of Songes or Ayres" (1597). Million thanks to Jon Sayles (guitar).

Marco da Gagliano: O sonno (Oh, sleep) (parts 1 & 2)* (7:05)
This fine Italian madrigal (published in 1602) offers an interesting parallel to the works by contemporary Englishmen cited above.
